Fr John Stringfellow
Parish Priest 1882-1917 

Third Parish Priest and responsible for the building of the Victorian Schools in Cemetery Road.
He was born in Liverpool in 1842and studied at Oscott college where he was ordained in 1866.following appointments in Stafford, Walsall and Caverswall he spent  9 years as a curate in Longton before he was made Parish Priest at the age of 40.
A fatherly priest loved for his kindness and generosity, he died aged 75 and is buried in the priests’ grave in Longton Cemetery.

During his Ministry he:
​Replaced the crumbling Gregory street schools.

Served for many years on the Longton School Board beginning
Renovation of organ and redecoration of Pugin Church
​He also paid off much of the debt on the presbytery, schools and parish with the help of his hardworking parishioners and curates. He served his people for 44 years. 35 of them as parish priest.

John Kelly - He moved from Caversall to Longton and was an excellent fundraiser for parish debts. He went to St Michael’s, More Street, Birmingham on leaving St Gregory’s.
Charles Kerin - A tremendous help to both teachers and children. He had poor health and moved south.
Cornelius Clomp - A Dutch priest from Oscott who advised on the decoration of the church and who obtained a diploma for the Children of Mary.
Francis Delaney - He came from Olton Seminary and was a brilliant preacher. He established the Young Men’s society  before moving to be parish priest of St Mary’s Walsall.  He often returned to visit Fr Stringfellow.

Samuel Myerscough - An excellent musician with an Oxford degree, he trained the choir. He also became a Jesuit.
