Fr Edward Daniel
Parish Priest 1822 - 1856 

Fr Edward was the first resident priest of the Gregory Street Church, who’s original mission area was Longton, Fenton, Stoke and Newcastle, He founded and served Stoke South. Little is known about him except that he is thought to be a local man who was 26 years of age when he began his ministry in Longton. He struggled on alone for 20 of his 34 years of service. He died aged 60 ‘after a hard and self-sacrificing life’ (Parish Archive).He is buried in the Priests’ grave in Longton Cemetery.

Built a Mass Chapel in Stoke
Hosted a retreat to the people of Lane End (Longton) by the now, Blessed Dominic Barberi
Invited Dominican Nuns to teach in Longton

Fr Daniel probably worked alone until the first recorded Assistant Priest arrived in 1836.
William Illsley - Uncle of Edward Ilsley, future Archbishop of Birmingham
Bernard Caragher
James Massam - Born in Lancashire and trained in Lisbon.  Arrived as a young curate, aged 25.
Nicholas O'Donnell - An Augustinian Priest who arrived early in the year.  From May to August he was Priest in Charge following the death of Fr Daniel.
This engraving was a memorial to Fr Daniel and was situated on a side wall in the later built Pugin Church. It can now be seen on a side wall in the ​
